Abstract
Background: Several studies have revealed a relationship between the metabolic syndrome and depression. But the relationship has not been studied yet in Korea. We studied whether metabolic syndrome and its components are associated with depression according to Beck¡¯s Depression Inventory(BDI).

Methods: We examined 449 subjects who visited one college hospital in Seoul for medical check-up. The metabolic syndrome was defined according to the criteria of the International Diabetes Federation (IDF). We used the Korean version of Beck¡¯s Depression Inventory to check the depression.

Results: Low HDL cholesterolemia was positively associated with depression in female (P<0.05), but negatively in men (P<0.05). Metabolic syndrome and other metabolic risk factors were not associated with depression. The body mass index was negatively correlated with depression. (P<0.05)

Conclusions: Low HDL cholesterolemia was associated with depression. Otherwise, no clear association was found between the metabolic syndrome and depression. (Korean J Health Promot Dis Prev 2007 ; 7(1) : 52~59)
